Simon is a Danish product designer located in Copenhagen.
He graduated from The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in 2012. His work consists of both small and large scale products. We love his style, bold & minimal. We had the chance to ask Simon a few questions. #exclusiveinterview
Hello Simon!
Was becoming a product designer a childhood dream?
I think for me personally it has always been kind of a passion to build things and to draw. I liked drawing a lot when I was younger so I along the way I thought that I was going to work in the graphic design area. Then I went to school where I had a semester for art and then a semester for product design and found it fascinating to create 3D objects instead of 2D images.
Where do you get your inspiration from?
The best inspiration for me is when I don’t look for it but come across it by coincidence. I don’t have a specific way of finding inspiration, but I tend to always photograph things I see, so I would say that my inspiration is everyday life.

How do you start designing a product?
It depends on the product. Some products are very function minded, where others are more about the shape, a candleholder, for example, is much more about the aesthetics than the function, but if you can add an extra value to the candleholder, you will create a new function and thereby a “new” product.
Which product was your first “alive design” / commercialized?
It was the Sumo pouf from Normann Copenhagen - 2012

Can you tell us more about the new designs you have presented at the Milan Design Fair with Norman Copenhagen ?
Focus on materials and new ways to combine a bit of the past with production of the present.
What is your best design / work memory?
Trying the first Form chair that came out of the mould is properly my best memory.
Any new exciting projects coming soon?
Yes many, but all secrets! However, they should be ready by fall.
If you had one advice to give to newly graduated designers, what would it be?
Have passion for materials and construction, passion is the best drive/motivation.
What is your morning routine?
Biking to the studio, and a cup of mocha from my Bialetti.
And finally, could you tell us what is your favorite city in the world? Why?
Copenhagen. I like the city because it is small (good for biking) but at the same time full of diversity and different things to do. I also like the very clear difference between the four seasons we have in Denmark, which changes the city’s expression four times a year.
