Mircea Anghel turns Studio and Estate into
Vibrant Art and Design Destination
—
Hi design lovers,
This summer, Romanian designer Mircea Anghel opened his Portuguese studio to the public for the first time. There, his latest and boldest creations to date are staged in a large-scale inaugural exhibition.
Mircea Anghel, a self-taught artist-designer hailing from Bucharest, Romania, has made a name for himself in Portugal with his remarkable craftsmanship and iconic gravity-defying tables.
Combining age-old woodworking techniques with experimental methods, Anghel's one-of-a-kind designs are entirely handmade using raw and responsibly sourced materials such as wood, stone, salt, water, wine, and fire.
His journey from a career in finance to becoming a renowned designer reflects his unwavering passion for woodworking and a dedication to creating extraordinary pieces.
In 2019, Anghel relocated his studio to a historic 1,500-square-meter sawmill situated in the scenic rural estate of Herdade da Barrosinha, Alcácer do Sal.
This move not only allowed him to expand the scale of his creations but also provided him with a rich source of inspiration in the skills and knowledge of the local boat-builders.
With a desire to support the community and revive the Portuguese tradition of boat building, Anghel kept the sawmill active, attracting shipwrights and craftsmen from all over Portugal.
Anghel's design philosophy revolves around process, balance, and equilibrium, guided by his scientific approach and lifelong interest in mathematics.
His pieces are characterized by their unique asymmetry and the use of contrasting materials, which he combines with daring engineering.
His creations capture a moment of organic transformation, seemingly midway between growth and decay, immersing viewers in a world where the natural flow of the creative process takes precedence.
This summer marks a significant milestone in Mircea Anghel's career as he opens the doors of his Portuguese studio to the public for the first time.
Located in the breathtaking landscape of Herdade da Barrosinha, his studio and surrounding grounds will serve as a vibrant hub for art, design, and craftsmanship.
An inaugural exhibition will showcase Anghel's latest and boldest creations, featuring his iconic tables and introducing new works that continue to push the boundaries of design.
Additionally, Anghel's commitment to community and collaboration is evident in his initiatives to revive boat building traditions and establish a creative residency program for young artists, designers, makers, and scientists.
